The Mid-day Meal Scheme is the popular name for school meal programme in India. It involves provision of lunch free of cost to school-children on all working days. The key objectives of the programme are: protecting children from classroom hunger, increasing school enrolment and attendance, improved socialisation among children belonging to all castes, addressing malnutrition, and social empowerment through provision of employment to women.
The Foodgrains are being lifted from FCI godowns and quality checked by the committee consisting of Distt. Education Officer, Dir. Health Services, representative of FCI and Principal of Schools. Chandigarh Administration is providing 2 mathis i.e., 1 sweet and 1 salted mathis per child per day. The mathis are regularly checked for their nutritional values/protein content per portion 8-12 gms and 300 calories by the Public Analysts, Punjab & Haryana. The state is bearing the cost of mathis @ Rs. 2.65 per child per day. The mathis are being provided in 110 Govt. Schools, 5 Govt. aided schools and 277 EGS centres, thereby covering 59993 children. Now the Chd. Admn. has introduced ready-to eat food/cooked meals under mid-day-meal scheme. Cooked meal in the form of chapatti based menu costing Rs.8/-per child/day and rice based menu costing Rs.6.14 per child/day includes dal and sabazi. It was initiated on trial basis in four schools. Thereafter the cooked meal has been introduced in 74 Govt. schools, thereby covering approx.40,000 students. The meals are being served in stainless steel thalis, spoon and glass.
The morning assembly is an indispensible part of any institution and offering ones heart and soul to God, through the medium of the prayer cleans the soul and purges it of all evil. Hence the Morning Prayer forms an important part in the day’s itinerary. The students are encouraged to speak on some thought-provoking topic, explain the thought for the day and read the news. All this ensures a holistic development of young minds. In addition to this the school celebrates most festivals and special days like the Republic Day, Independence Day in the traditional way so that the students imbibe the best of our value system, traditions and culture. Assembly is an important feature of any educational Institution. The morning assembly of Government High School, Manimajra, Chandigarh has a significant role in the functioning of school. Talks on various subjects are delivered by the teachers every day to enhance the moral and spiritual quotient of the students. Teachers encourages the students to think big and prepare themselves for the future so that they can become responsible citizens of the country and contribute to its development. Talks are also delivered in the assembly on the life of great personalities such as freedom, fighters, historians and scientists. Different days have been assigned to different classes for the morning assembly to stream line the process and prevent chaos during the assembly.
